Sisters enjoys lively kite art stroll

Rainy weather couldn't dampen the spirits of local art lovers, who turned out to take in 25 pieces of kite-inspired art at the KiteStrings 2003 Art Stroll on Friday, March 21.

The KiteStrings series of art events will culminate in an art auction, proceeds from which will benefit the Sisters Folk Festival Americana Project. The Americana Project introduces high school students to American roots music, songwriting and musicianship through interdisciplinary classes at Sisters High School.

Sisters shops and galleries hosted works of various local artists -- from paintings to ironwork -- all inspired by the form and function of the kite.

In keeping with the musical roots of the project, many venues offered live music. The evening culminated in a giant, impromptu jam session at Sisters Athletic Club that featured more than a dozen local musicians and an enthusiastic audience.

The next KiteStrings event is a community Kite Fly and Auction set for Saturday, April 12, at Squaw Creek Ranch off Camp Polk Road.

The Kite Fly is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes kite workshops, building and flying. The day of family entertainment will also include music from Americana Project students.

An auction of the kite-related art seen at the Art Stroll will follow at 6 p.m. at the same location.
