Public aid needed to help rescued cats

The Humane Society of Central Oregon and the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office rescued 53 cats from a single-wide mobile home in La Pine on Saturday evening April 26.

The cats were found in deplorable conditions which required rescuers to wear masks and gloves to withstand the stench of ammonia and feces that covered the home, according to a Humane Society statement.

The public can best assist the Humane Society with monetary donations for their care, which includes diagnostic tests, medications, veterinary care and special dietary supplements.

The Humane Society of Central Oregon reports that some of the cats required critical care.

Premium dry and canned kitten food is also needed to help in their recovery. Donations can be made through the website (www.hsco.org), by calling 382-3537, or sending it to the shelter (61170 SE 27th St., Bend, OR 97702).

All of the cats will need to be vaccinated, de-wormed, bathed and spayed or neutered.

The Humane Society is hoping citizens will come forward to adopt the cats once they regain their health.

"Despite the horrible conditions of starvation and filth most are amazingly friendly and will make good companions," said Troy Kerstetter, Animal Welfare Director.

"Most of the cats are under two years of age and truly deserve a chance to live in a caring home. The Humane Society of Central Oregon will be looking for adopters to open their hearts and homes to these cats."
