Outlaw Open funds football

Local golfers turned out for a day on the links at Aspen Lakes Golf Course on Friday, June 20, and raised $16,000, primarily for Sisters school football programs.

The Cyrus family donates the use of the course for the tournament, which drew 120 golfers this year.

The foursome of Chuck Gibson, Denny Bennett and David and Christian Green won the tournament with a scramble score of 58.

Sisters High School football coach Bob Macauley chuckled as he noted that the Green brothers (of the championship SHS golf team) had to be considered ringers.

Gibson also took closest-to-the pin honors. Pat Mason hit the closest shot for the women.

The men's longest drive was recorded by Aaron Black and the longest drive for women was made by Becky Coffield.

The golfers listened to jazz from Jody Henderson's Alumni Jazz Band and enjoyed a dinner and auction following the tournament.

The Outlaw Open is the major funding source for football in Sisters -- and not just for the high school program.

According to Macauley, the school district launched a sixth grade football program with $7,000 worth of equipment purchased with Open funds last year. The fund support the entire program, grades 6-12.
