Double F Nursery opens near Sisters

Flora and Fran Steffan's home is itself the perfect advertisement for their new, on-site nursery business.

The log home is surrounded by artistic landscaping designed by Flora and featuring antique western paraphernalia -- and a riot of colorful flowers.

The house is also festooned with the Double F Nursery specialty -- hanging baskets.

"None of this was available in Sisters," Flora said. "Everybody was going over to the Valley to get their hanging baskets."

Double F Nursery offers customization and delivery of the baskets -- all at a very competitive price.

The nursery offers a selection of annuals and perennials and Flora has learned from experience what plants do well in Central Oregon.

"We deal a lot in flowers and shrubs that the deer don't eat," Flora said. "That's been very popular."

The couple started the nursery five weeks ago and they report strong word-of-mouth and repeat business.

According to Fran, the business was a natural for Flora, who is not only aptly named, but has always loved working with plants.

"Our place was (already) beginning to look like a nursery," said Fran. "The local people are real appreciative having a local nursery closer to them."

Flora offers landscape design services and her work on her own property is testament to her creativity and skill. The nursery also does special order business for clients.

"We do a lot of special ordering," he said. "We haven't been stumped on that yet."

Double F Nursery is located four miles east of Sisters at the intersection of Highway 126 and Hurtley Ranch Road.
