Jazz festival provides scholarships

Two recent Sisters High School graduates and an incoming freshman have been awarded honorary scholarships by the Sisters Jazz Festival as part of the Festival's commitment to youth education projects.

Graduates Angie Zandonatti and Benjamin Scharf were recognized for their ongoing participation in the arts. Zandonatti, who designed the Sisters Jazz Festival logo, will study graphic arts at Brigham Young University, entering that program this fall.

Scharf has been accepted for the prestigious University of Oregon Jazz Studies program, a rare achievement for a beginning student at the university, according to Sisters High School Band Director Jody Henderson, a member of the Jazz Festival Board.

Scharf is an accomp- lished pianist and guitarist, who composes for both instruments.

The third recipient, Justin Veloso, will use his award for tuition to the Mel Brown Summer Jazz Camp next week at Western Oregon University. He is expected to be the lead drummer for the Sisters High School Jazz Band this year.

Funds for the Jazz Festival youth program are raised in part from a raffle conducted at the September 12-14 event.
