One of the highlights of the summer season at Black Butte Ranch (BBR) is the annual Art at the Barn show and reception.

The show is scheduled this year for Friday and Saturday, August 29-30.

Several BBR women have worked for weeks on a hand-made "Strip Quilt" to be raffled off at the show. Tickets for the colorful and ornate quilt, valued at between $800 and $900, are available in advance of the show at Black Butte Ranch Lodge.

"We got the idea for the quilt from a course taught by The Stitchin' Post here in Sisters last November," said Peggy Click-Taylor.

"A dozen or so of us made a series of four patches and stripped them into rows of eleven to make the finished quilt," she said.

A patch is made up of four triangular pieces coming together at their points to form a square. There are 33 patches in all on this 60-by-94-inch quilt.

Those working on the quilt, in addition to Click-Taylor, were Ruth Ingham, Marti Kufchak, Lyn Jacobs (who is also responsible for acquiring artists for the show), Ruth Peterson, Barbara Mowers, Bev Gaskin and Nancy Hoff.

Art at the Barn will open Friday evening with a wine reception at 5 p.m. Tickets for the raffle will be available then and all day Saturday during the show from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

In addition to showing the works of 25 local artists, there will be a silent auction with representative works from many of the featured artisans on display.

A smaller version of the "Strippy Quilt" will be part of the auction, according to Kufchak. That quilt is 42 by 54 inches.

Some of the same material and design used in the quilts was also used to make a vest which will also be auctioned during the show.

"Proceeds from the auctions and raffle will go to help with scholarships and programs for art students at Sisters High School and to purchase permanent art pieces by our Art Guild for display in public places," said Kufchak.

"Sleeves" were added to both quilts by Ingham so that they can be hung with a rod or fixture on a wall. Bonnie Sherrell made customized labels for all of the pieces.

"The Art at the Barn show is non-juried and open to all artists who are residents of the ranch, employees or relative or friends," said Jacobs. "Those wishing to show their works may call me at 595-6275 for entry information.

"We do like our artists to have some association with Black Butte Ranch," she said.

In addition to oil, watercolor, pastel and acrylic paintings, there will be wood and stone-carved sculp- ture, ceramics and framed photographs.

A handful of high school artists have been selected to show their works. Most are students of Michael Baynes.

The event is sponsored by the Black Butte Ranch Art Guild.
