News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Sisters High School Jazz Band took first place at the Capital Conference Jazz band competition for the fifth consecutive year on Wednesday, February 18.
The annual event was held at North Marion High School. The honor was awarded to the Outlaws after Stayton and Sweet Home were announced as the second and third place winners, respectively.
"Each year receiving first place has become (a) more worthy accomplishment because the quality of all the bands from other schools has been constantly improving," said band director Jody Henderson. "Four of the bands really presented some strong points this year."
Three out of the four outstanding section awards issued were awarded to Sisters musicians for performances by the trumpet, trombone and rhythm sections.
Outstanding soloists on each instrument also received special recognition at the event. Six of the seven outstanding soloist awards went to Sisters students. They were: Shane Connor -- saxophone; Erik King -- trombone; Corey Rood -- bass; Justin Veloso -- drums; Alyssa Boley -- piano and Casey Pyke -- guitar.
"We usually have our share of stand-out soloists and sections but this year Sisters students received the majority of individual recognition," Henderson said.
Henderson noted that the guest clinician and judge, Kevin Eagan, challenged the Sisters jazz band to go as far beyond their current level of performance as possible.
Several student musicians had their own thoughts:
Sophomore trumpet/bass player Benji Nagel has been playing for Henderson since he was in sixth grade.
He said, "Mr. Henderson is completely dedicated to the band and prepares us so well. Once I'd heard all the other bands I was confident we'd take first place again."
Senior bassist Corey Rood gave credit to Henderson.
"The difference for us is Jody," he said. "He is so enthusiastic and so involved. He's easy to connect to, he helps and guides you, but doesn't force you."
"We are so fortunate to be in a community that really supports jazz and has it's own number of jazz players and musicians," added Shane Connor.
