The animals at the Humane Society of Central Oregon in Bend received a visit from the "Furry Friends" group from Sisters Middle School on Friday, February 27.
The three-day interim week elective class was led by Marion Harrison.
The 13 Furry Friends visited the shelter to learn about the Humane Society of Central Oregon and what it does for the animals and people of the community. Eyes widened as students heard that the small shelter cares for 4,000 animals each year and that the organization is dependent upon donations from the community to provide services.
To help provide mental and physical stimulation for the homeless cats, the Furry Friends made catnip toys for them to play with while at the shelter and to take to their new home. The Furry Friends also treated the dogs to the special homemade biscuits they made in class.
The observant students noticed that one of the dogs in the kennels was allergic to wheat and made sure that she did not receive one of the biscuits they made which included wheat.
The group also brought in donations of badly needed cat litter.
