Softball facility is 'field of dreams'

Sisters' new softball field was a labor of love for many local community members. photo by Conrad Weiler The vision of a new softball field becomes reality this week for coaches and players of the Lady Outlaws' young team.

"We'd like to invite all our loyal supporters out for Thursday's (May 13) 5 p.m. game with Stayton and our final game with North Marion on Monday afternoon," said assistant coach Amber McCloud. "The new field has been completed and we're ready for action."

And supporters there are, including Mike Burke of Sisters Landscaping, who spread the dirt for the infield, Ray Pasquetti, who did the final grading, Sisters Rental, which loaned use of an edger, B&B Builders, which donated lots of work hours.

SOAR provided help and Figaro's Pizza fed hungry workers during the work parties preparing the field.

McCloud also singled out Saf Canja for shagging balls during batting practice.

"In February, we went to the Sisters Schools Foundation with a request for support of the new softball field," said McCloud. "They came through with $8,000 of backing. We also received tremendous support from Sisters School District officials for our project including Principal Bob Macauley, Mary Flande, Athletic Director, and Bob Martin, construction engineer. Also, total support from families, players and the coaching staff has paid off with the new field located behind Sisters High School."

The softball program started seven years ago.

"Head coach Mitch Deaderick has done a tremendous job over the years getting the program started and bringing it to today's new softball field," McCloud said.

Rounding out the coaching staff is assistant coach Chris Peters.

The group finished the field last week, rolling the premium dirt over the infield, removing rocks and tying down the bases.

"The basics are in place," reported McCloud. "We still need a scoreboard, bleachers, and other things but they'll come later. Now we invite our fans and supporters out for the last two games of the season and to see how much our softball team has improved."
