Jerry Werner points out details of his mural to a large crowd at the project unveiling on Friday, May 28. photo by Jim Cornelius Thirty or so community members braved cold winds and an occasional downpour on Friday, May 28, to celebrate the unveiling of a new mural at Harold and Dorothy Barclay Memorial Park in downtown Sisters.

Barclay Park development committee chair Peter Storton praised the artist for his efforts, particularly in getting the work completed in time for Rodeo Weekend.

"We managed to pull this off in a 60-day period with the help of the artist, Jerry Werner," Storton said.

City Manager Eileen Stein noted that Barclay Park was honored with an Award of Excellence by the League of Oregon Cities. She said that she now expects that the city will be honored for public art as well.

The painting uses the motif of quilts to symbolize major events -- the Quilt Show, obviously, the Sisters Rodeo, Sisters' music festivals and car shows. In the background, figures can be seen engaging in the range of Sisters' classic activities -- golf, fishing, hunting, cycling.

Werner pointed out features of the mural for the large crowd, noting one special item that appeared as a fortuitous coincidence.

One of the quilts features a picture of a red '56 Thunderbird. It turned out that, without knowing it, Werner had included a depiction of a car that Harold Barclay once drove.
