Anderson selected for 'Sisters Sings'

Miriam Anderson. photo by Sue Anderson Miriam Anderson, a 2004 Sisters High School graduate, has been selected to perform as a soloist at "Sisters Sings" on Saturday, June 26, at Bronco Billy's Ranch Grill & Saloon.

The event, featuring light opera and show tunes, is a fund-raiser for Bel Canto Northwest International Vocal Institute and the Sisters Rotary Club.

Anderson was selected by Sisters High School Choir Director Tara Clarke. The Sisters teen, who won a solo voice competition earlier this year, will sing "Se Florindo e Fedele," written by Alessandro Scarlotti.

The event features some of the finest singers from the Bel Canto Northwest Festival and Vocal Institute.

Bel Canto is an advanced, intensive, and individual three-week training program for dedicated young professional and pre-professional singers.

It is based at Portland State University.

The program enables talented young singers to work with the best in European and American teaching in the classroom, on the concert platform and on stage. Daily instruction in vocal technique, acting for singers, musical skills, and diction and style coaching help prepare the young singer for a career in the profession.

Former Bel Canto participants are singing with opera companies and apprentice programs throughout the United States, including Glimmerglass Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Portland Opera, Seattle Opera, Opera Omaha, Cincinnati Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Opera San Jose, Western Opera Theater, Central City Opera, Tulsa Opera, Tacoma Opera and Santa Fe Opera.

The 2004 session features performances on campus and throughout Portland.

The singers featured at "Sisters Sings" include:

  • Conrad Buck, baritone, recently graduated from the undergraduate program at Oregon State University, attending the Peabody Conservatory in the fall.
  • Brian Tierney, tenor, finishing his undergraduate studies in Music Performance. He recently appeared in the Portland State University production of "Die Fledermaus."
  • Reginald Tonry, bass (Eugene Opera, Metropolitan Opera, New York) will be appearing at Bel Canto '04 in Donizetti's "Elisir D'Amore."

In Sisters, the group will perform a selection of arias and songs at 7 p.m., following a 6 p.m. buffet. After a dessert-and-coffee intermission, they will perform Mozart's "The Impressario."

Tickets are $75 per person (light supper, dessert, coffee). For information and tickets call 1-800-821-6233.
