Scott Barton. photo by Rongi Yost Sisters High School golfer Scott Barton won the Boys Division (age 14-15) at the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge held at the Forest Hills Golf Course in Cornelius on Monday and Tuesday, June 21-22. Barton finished with a two-day total of 141 (71-70).
The victory assured Barton a trip to the 2004 Callaway Junior World Championships in La Jolla, California.
Barton was pleased with the victory at Forest Hills, but he said the course didn't seem that difficult.
"To be honest, it was pretty easy. The first day I felt like I left some shots out there, but I stayed patient, and overall I was pleased with the way I played," he said.
While competing at the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge Barton said the World Championships were the furthest thing from his mind.
"I was just trying to do well and win the tournament at hand," he said.
The Junior World Championships will be held July 13-16 at the South Course at Torrey Pines in La Jolla.
The course is recognized as one of the top golf facilities in the nation.
The course sits atop cliffs that tow er above the Pacific Ocean and golfers enjoy views of the coast line and deep ravines.
The Championships are held at Torrey Pines each July and attract over 1,000 junior golfers from countries worldwide.
Barton is excited about the opportunity to compete with top junior golfers from around the globe.
"It's a pretty special deal," he said. "It's one of the most elite junior golf tournaments in the world. I really don't have any expectations. I'm going to go, have fun and see how I stack up."
