City seeks to fill new council vacancy

The City of Sisters is looking for a citizen to serve on the Sisters City Council, replacing Councilor Deb Kollodge.

Kollodge is stepping down from the council effective July 30. Her replacement will serve out Kollodge's term, which expires in 2006.

Candidates for appointment must live within the city limits of Sisters.

"The council's job is to set policy for the city," said City Manager Eileen Stein.

According to Stein, the position entails about five to 10 hours of work per week. Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursday evening of each month and the council holds morning workshops on the other Thursdays.

Stein said the council needs "someone who has the general welfare of the community in mind."

Stein said the issues facing the council include the proposed couplet; renegotiation of the city's contract with the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office; refinement of the development code regarding density; and building a new city hall, among others.

She said a prospective councilor should care about the full range of concerns facing the city.

"It's kind of nice to have someone who has an interest in all of those issues instead of just one or two areas of interest," Stein said.

She said the current council has that kind of membership.

"They work together well when that's their mind-set coming into the job," she said.

Previous governmental experience is helpful, but the city has resources to train new councilors.

Those interested in being considered for appointment to the Sisters City Council vacancy should submit a letter of interest by August 6 to Eileen Stein, City Manager, City of Sisters, P.O. Box 39, 150 N. Fir, Sisters, OR 97759.
