Health alert posted for algae at Suttle Lake

Geese are the only creatures in the water. photo by Jim Cornelius Swimmers and recreationists were advised to stay out of the water at Suttle Lake over the Fourth of July weekend due to the presence of blue-green algae, according to the Sisters Ranger District.

A health advisory posted at the lake stated that "Contact with these waters may be harmful to your health. Swallowing or inhaling droplets of water are especially to be avoided."

The advisory advised people and their pets to avoid contact with Suttle Lake waters, including swimming, wading, water-skiing and water sports.

According to the Forest Service, water sampling has confirmed the presence of a species of blue-green algae (Anabaena flos-aquae) having the ability to produce toxins harmful to humans and animals.

Symptoms of exposure generally develop quickly and can include numbness, tingling, dizziness and even paralysis -- leading to difficulty breathing and cardiac arrhythmia, the advisory states. Other symptoms may include skin irritation, weakness, diarrhea, nausea, cramps and fainting.

"All these symptoms require immediate medical attention," the advisory states. "Your children and your pets are particularly susceptible."

Continued monitoring of the lake will be conducted by the U.S. Forest Service and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The public will be advised when the concern no longer exists.
