Yearbook earns publisher's recognition

Sisters High School teacher and yearbook advisor Diana Prichard and her yearbook staff continue to gain recognition and awards from the Herff Jones Publishing Company.

Last year the SHS 2003 yearbook was selected by Herff Jones as a sample book for the southern and western regions of the United States. Only 12 yearbooks were chosen for this honor out of the 1,000 printed at the Logan, Utah plant. Books were chosen for excellence and cutting edge design and use of technology.

This year the yearbook staff was notified by Herff Jones that the 2004 yearbook had been selected to be featured as a showcase yearbook in "Ideas that Fly," a 128- page book of outstanding publications.

Herff Jones prints more than 7,000 books in the U.S. and Canada and each year they select fewer than 1 percent of the books (between 50 and 60) to showcase in Ideas that Fly. The yearbooks are selected for: journalistic accuracy; consistent style and theme use throughout the book; unique concepts and design solutions; coverage and inclusion of the student body; and as an overall example of outstanding yearbook journalism.

"Ideas that Fly" will be printed in December of 2004 and will show The Outlaw 2004 yearbook cover, endsheet and examples of outstanding interior spreads from each section. The book will also contain a directory that will list the school name, city, state, yearbook name, adviser's name and editor's name.

A quote from the yearbook's publisher stated, "The Outlaw has been selected from all of the yearbooks Herff Jones prints in the United States and Canada to represent the very best in junior high, high school and college yearbooks."

Prichard credits her students for the excellent results produced by the class.

"I've been fortunate to have terrific students to work with over the years," she said.

"The editors and photographers have been especially talented and hard-working.

"In recent years: Editors Angela McGuire, Susan Hyde, Janelle Wysong, Beth Golden, Michelle Orlandos, Kelly Craven, DeLaney Green, Jesse Prichard and Ashlee Francis. Photographers: Liz Buchser, Besse Ward, Jordan Beck and Conner Burck.

"Each time one of these students graduated, I wondered how we would ever get along without them," Prichard said. "But the next year more students come along to 'step into the big shoes' and they continue creating great yearbooks."

This year, Alyssa Boley and Michael Chiaravalle are the editors. Tyler Schild returns as the business manager.

During the year Prichard has 30 to 40 students on staff. Some only take the class for a trimester and others take Yearbook all year long.

"No matter how long they stay, we need each one to get the job done. This trimester the staff is 21 members strong," said Prichard.

Prichard told The Nugget the yearbook staff receives tremendous support from their publishing representative, Bill Dube.

"He encourages us to try new technology. He also works very hard to help us get the best product for our money. He's a true encourager and helps push us to do a little better each year," said Prichard.

"We also have tremendous programs here to get kids involved," said Prichard. "This makes the yearbook staff's job easier because there are so many good events to cover. When people from other schools look at our yearbook they often comment about what a great, fun place the school is.

"It makes my job more fun, too."
