News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws boys basketball team bounced the Molalla Indians off the court with a final score of 68-42 at home on Tuesday, February 8. to get their fourth straight victory.
Sisters started off with energy and enthusiasm right from the tipoff. A reverse lay-up by Jordan Weber under the basket set the tempo.
Two consecutive steals resulted in five more points for the Outlaws, including a three-point shot by Guy Mount.
Halfway through the first period Weber threw a half court pass to Carter Davenport who made the shot to push the Outlaw lead to 16-2.
The Outlaws were tenacious and continued the fast tempo.
With 2:30 left in the first quarter Molalla was finally able to score their second and final bucket of the quarter. By the end of the period the Outlaws held a 22-point advantage at 26-4.
Scoring was held to a minimum for the Outlaws the first four minutes of the second quarter, but by the half Sisters had taken a commanding 36-10 lead.
Guy Mount scored Sisters’ first five points of the third quarter and continued to be an offensive threat for the Outlaws at the three-point line. With .3 seconds left in the period Nick Purvis drained his two shots at the free throw line to push the Outlaws to a 50-23 advantage.
Coach Rand Runco was able to substitute liberally from the bench during the fourth quarter leading up to the 68-42 victory.
Due to an ankle injury the Outlaws were missing Jeff Sampson at the post position and Coach Runco admits he was a little worried going into the game.
“Molalla is very tall and athletic,” said Runco, “and we give up four to six inches in every position. Andy Burke and James Mohl did an outstanding job in the post position.
“They might not always have the stats because they have to defend the biggest, toughest player on the opposing team,” Runco said. “Both Andy and James played great defense tonight and blocked out to hold Molalla’s key rebounders down.”
“Our first quarter was the best first quarter we’ve had all year,” said Runco. “We really cranked it up and our defensive energy was awesome. The biggest thing was we didn’t foul and that kept us in tempo and when we’re in tempo we’re very tough.”
Guy Mount led the Outlaws’ offensive attack with 23 points, including six three pointers. Mount was eight for 13 from the field and six for 11 at the three-point line. Carter Davenport contributed 15 points for the Outlaws.
Jordan Weber had a great all around game with 11 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Jeff Fitter had 11 points for the night, dished out seven assists and grabbed five steals.
The Outlaws shot 100 percent from the field the first quarter and finished the game at 67 percent.
Just three days later the Outlaws notched their fifth straight win when they defeated Sweet Home 59-53.
In the Outlaws’ last game with Sweet Home they lost by 20 points and knew this one was going to be tough. Sisters only trailed once the entire game and that was at the very start at 2-0.
From that point on the Outlaws never looked back.
