Lady Outlaws win two on hardwood

MacKinzie McClain had a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Outlaws to victory over Molalla on Tuesday, February 8.

Sisters and Molalla both had trouble scoring in the first quarter. Katie Hughes hit a big three pointer at the end of the period to give the Outlaws a 11-4 lead. At the half the Outlaws held a 19-9 advantage.

McClain scored Sisters’ first eight points in the fourth quarter and led Sisters to the 48-27 win.

Sisters’ full court press was very effective as was their half court trap.

“The kids are doing a nice job on defense,” said Coach Bill Blevins, “and when our offense kicks in we could be dangerous.”

McClain led the Outlaws offensively with 16 points; 13 of those came in the second half.

“It was nice to see MacKinzie with a break-out game,” said Blevins. “She found some confidence and is starting to shoot more threes.

Jenny Boswell also hit the double digit mark at 12 points and had six steals. Hughes contributed six points for the night, both three pointers.

Cindy Harp grabbed eight rebounds for Sisters and Elyss Clasen had four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

“Elyss did a great job getting the ball to people and not turning the ball over against the press,” said Blevins.

Just three days later Sisters downed the Sweet Home Huskies with a final score of 41-38.

The Lady Outlaws kept the score tied or led the way the entire game on Friday night. At the half Sisters was up 22-17. In the third period the Outlaws were outscored 11 to six by the Lady Huskies and by the end of the third Sweet Home had tied it up 28-28.

With 40 seconds to go in the fourth quarter Katie Hughes hit a very long two point shot to push the Outlaws to a two point advantage. At the 20 second mark Sweet Home tied it up 38-38.

With 12 seconds remaining on the clock the ball was passed to Katie Hughes. Hughes finally got a pass to Elyss Clasen at the top of the key with three seconds left in the game. Clasen did a quick reverse to Kristi VanBlaricum and Sweet Home’s wing went for the steal but missed, leaving VanBlaricum wide open for her three-point shot which was good right at the buzzer.

Sisters will take on top-ranked Cascade on Friday.
