Outlaws finish league tied for second

The Stayton Eagles snapped the Outlaw boys basketball winning streak on Tuesday, February 15.

The Outlaws fell 60-48.

Three days later Sisters lost 77-61 at home against Cascade in their final game of Capital Conference play.

The Outlaws tied with Cascade for second place and were to face the Cougars again on Tuesday, February 22, at Sweet Home in a playoff tiebreaker.

In last Tuesday’s game against the Eagles the second period proved to be Sisters’ demise.

“The second quarter just destroyed us,” said Coach Rand Runco. “We were outscored 18-7 and they beat us on the boards.”

At the half the Outlaws trailed the Eagles 36-19. The deficit was too much for Sisters to overcome. Stayton maintained the lead and won the contest by 12 points.

Runco said, “This was the first in six games we haven’t controlled the tempo. We didn’t execute under their pressure and our press was not effective. The bottom line is they played well and we didn’t.”

Carter Davenport played a tough game for the Outlaws and finished with 15 points.

Against Cascade, Coach Runco said his team played with great heart but shot the ball poorly.

The Outlaws shot 36 percent from the field while Cascade shot 63 percent.

“It was a wild and exciting game on both ends,” said Runco. “We just came up short. Cascade is a very tall and athletic team. We went down early and just couldn’t close the gap.”

Carter Davenport continued to be a steady player for the Outlaws and led the team with 18 points. Jordan Weber had 14 points.
