It was a frustrating weekend for wrestlers Isaac Gordon and Brandon O’Brien. Both wrestlers lost in some close matches at the State Wrestling Tournament at the State Fairgrounds in Salem, Thursday and Friday, February 17-18.
The first match of the tournament started out well for both Gordon and O’Brien.
Gordon (125 pounds) won by decision 12-8 over Kyle Watkins of Pleasant Hill and O’Brien pinned Ryan Sahsel of Taft in 2:55.
Gordon lost his next two matches and was eliminated.
O’Brien lost his second match by decision 6-3 to Josh Gannon of Elmira, who went on to take first place. O’Brien moved to the consolation bracket and in the next match won by decision 13-2 over Terak Raines of South Umpqua. O’Brien lost by decision 2-0 on Friday to Gabe Hansen of Riverside.
Coach Tony Cosby said, “The weekend was one of extreme frustration. All the matches that we lost were really, really close. There’s nothing to blame. Things just didn’t fall our way.”
