News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
This year the annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 30 is being moved to the Village Green from Camp Polk Cemetery.
The decision was made by the Sisters American Legion and The Veterans of Foreign Wars to allow easier access and increased capacity for those wishing to attend.
The event has become an important Sisters tradition as veterans and their families acknowledge the fallen of American wars.
This year the Crook County High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps consisting of an honor guard, rifle squad and drill team will perform at the ceremony.
This team has earned national recognition for the excellence of their performance. On March 17 the Corps leaves for California to participate in the “All Services” Drill Team Competition.
They are one of 18 teams chosen to participate.
In the past four years they have won the Pacific Northwest Regional Tri-State Championship competition. Audiences at Sisters High School on Veterans Day in November have enjoyed the precision and accuracy of their performance.
Their ability to participate in competition throughout the Northwest relies on the financial support they receive from communities in Central Oregon.
The youths’ uniforms are donated by the Navy. All other expenses are paid for through donations and fund-raisers.
There is no cost to the Sisters community or local veterans groups.
Donations may be sent to the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, attn: Donny Jackson, Crook County High School, 1100 S.E. Lynn Blvd. Prineville, OR 97754.
