Sisters woman cited for credit union membership

Mariel Stones of Sisters was spotlighted by the Unitus Community Credit Union as the member who has been with the Credit Union the longest.

The Credit Union was begun in 1937 — as Oregon Telephone Employees Credit Union — and Mariel Stones joined that same year, on July 28. She has been a member for over 67 years.

Mariel married James Grant Stones, one of the Credit Union’s charter members, in 1935.

While Grant worked his way from delivery boy to electrical engineer for the phone company, Mariel raised the family and also worked 15 years for Nestle’s.

She has six children: three boys and three girls, 25 grandchildren, 75 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
