News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaw baseball team defeated Scappoose 14-1 in its first game of the John Day Tournament on Thursday, March 24.
Friday’s and Saturday’s games were a disappointment. Sisters lost 10-3 to 2A Grant Union on Friday and suffered an 11-1 loss to 4A Sheldon on Saturday.
In Friday’s game against Scappoose the Outlaw bats were hot and the pitching was great. Sisters had 13 hits as a team with five runs crossing the plate in the fourth inning and eight runs in the fifth.
Jeff Sampson had three hits for the Outlaws including a double. Jeff Fitter had three singles and both Carter Davenport and Ben Bushnell singled twice. Blake Poynor had a double.
Coach Kevin Bigby was pleased with Jeff Fitter’s pitching performance.
“Jeff was really sharp,” said Bigby.
“He was constantly ahead in the count and only threw 54 pitches. He was veryefficient.”
Cody Ramsey and Tyler Trask shared the pitching duties in Friday’s loss to Grant Union.
The Outlaws held an early 3-2 lead at the bottom of the third inning and then Outlaw errors resulted in runs for GU.
“In the fourth inning we gave up seven runs,” said Bigby. “We botched a couple of first-and-third situations which enabled GU to extend their inning and score several more runs.”
Sisters’ three runs all came in the second inning. Austin Stark and Jake Klient both drew walks and then advanced on a passed ball. Jeff Sampson followed with a clutch single to score Stark and Klient.
Sampson stole second base and scored the Outlaw’s third run on an error.
Sisters lost 11-1 to Sheldon on Saturday in their final game of the tournament.
“We competed well the first two games,” said Bigby, “and then let down on the last day.
“We had six errors and the difference in this game was that we weren’t able to make the routine play.”
The Outlaws travel to Molalla to take on the Indians on Thursday, March 31.
