CD offers a virtual tour of the Metolius Basin

The Friends of the Metolius have released an interactive compact disc that offers a beautiful look at and listen to the Metolius Basin — second only to being there. “The Metolius: A Living River in Your Hands,” guides viewers with photographs, paintings, music and words through the flora and fauna of the Metolius Basin. The CD comes with a 24-page color booklet.

“Through education and awareness we can continue the mission to protect the Metolius,” said Friends of the Metolius member Bill Johnson. He was responsible for project management, development of the interactive computer component, and photographic/graphic content.

The CD is rich with information. The content draws upon the work of artists and resource professionals to communicate the aesthetic, historical and scientific qualities of the Metolius. Using a PC or Mac, viewers can click through five sections on the CD.

In “Sense of Place,” there are Native American stores, and memories of lookout towers and Camp Sherman. In “Outstanding Values,” viewers learn about the geology, fisheries and wildlife of the area. The “Metolius Explorer” section includes a map with information onclimate.

In “Signs of the Times,” the CD covers wildfires, noxious weeds, camping and off-road vehicles. The “Field Guide” section teaches about the trees, birds, wildflowers and shrubs native to the Metolius.

All of the sections have links to the FOM website, where updates and supplements to the CD content are available. The accompanying music may be played while viewing the interactive content or played separately on an audio CD player.

Johnson says feedback has been positive.

Johnson said a main goal of the project is to increase stewardship of the area. He wants viewers to “increase their appreciation for the natural values of the Metolius Basin.”

Financial support for the CD project came from the Friends of the Metolius and grants.

The Friends completed the CD a few months ago and mailed a postcard to residents of the Metolius Basinoffering a complimentary copy of the CD.

Additional copies of the CD can be purchased for $15 at the Camp Sherman Store and Paulina Springs Books, as well as at http://www.metoliusfriends.org.
