Empty Bowls program aids FAN

The sixth annual Empty Bowls Soup Dinner fund-raiser will be held on Friday, April 22, 6 p.m. at Sisters High School.

A ceramic bowl is selected the night of the dinner to enjoy home-style chicken noodle soup or garden veggie pasta soup along with French bread, cookies, coffee and punch. After dinner the bowl is yours to take home.

The handmade ceramic bowls are made by art teacher Mike Baynes and his students. There will also be a variety of bowls to select from that have been donated by local potters.

The meal will be prepared by Nutrition Service coordinator Janice Comfort and her culinary arts students. Leadership and art students will help serve the meal and assist with set-up and clean-up.

A silent auction will offer a variety of items to bid upon.

Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger. The concept began with an art teacher in Michigan and has grown into the development of the The Imagine/RENDER Group, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing about lasting social change through the arts, education, and community-based projects.

Guests keep their bowls as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world.

Baynes brought the project to Sisters to keep his students alert to the needs in the community and throughout the world.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Sisters Family Access Network (FAN) emergency access fund to assist local families in crisis situations.

Only 130 tickets are available. All tickets will be pre-sold this year. No tickets will be available at the door. Cost is $15 for adult and children’s bowls. (Children 12 and under can eat from a kitchen bowl for $5. Only 14 kitchen bowl tickets are available.) Call Pinky Pagano at Sisters High School to reserve/purchase tickets, 549-4045.
