School board candidates will debate issues

Rob Corrigan and Jeff Haken will face off in a debate on the issues facing Sisters schools on Thursday, April 28, at the Sisters High School Lecture Room at 7 p.m.

Sisters Education Association (SEA), the Oregon School Employees Association and The Nugget are sponsoring the event.

According to SEA representative Kelly Powell, the Sisters School Board Candidate Forum will include introductions of Mike Gould and Glen Lasken, candidates for uncontested seats, but the event will focus on the candidates vying for the contested seat on the board.

Lisa Smith, a Sisters parent and site council member, will act as moderator.

Powell is actively soliciting questions from the public in advance of the forum. Smith will pose questions to the candidates; there will be no questions from the audience during the debate.

“I’ve solicited questions personally from all sorts of people,” Powell said. “I’m hoping to get a whole range of questions to address all the issues in running the school district.”

Topics will include transportation and custodial services, academic curriculum and standards, behavioral issues, special needs services, education philosophy, finances and more.

To submit questions for the forum, e-mail Powell at [email protected] or call him at 617-1852.

The school board election is set for May 17; ballots go out at the end of this month.
