News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The eighth annual traveling Capital Conference art show is on display in the commons at Sisters High School through Friday, April 22.
“We kicked off the art show in March with a reception at Stayton High School,” said art teacher Mike Baynes. “We all viewed the collection of artwork, had lunch and the kids talked about their art.”
Art teachers from each school in the conference selected four pieces from their students’ art work that automatically were placed in the traveling art show. Six additional pieces were voted upon and chosen by the art students represented from each school in the conference. Two were from Sisters.
Baynes chose art work by Kaci Oerter, Rose Slavkovsky, Jamie Kemp and Ashley Crofoot.
This year three of the four pieces chosen by Baynes were still life drawings.
“Usually I choose more of a variety in the pieces but this year the still life drawings were just exceptional,” he said.
Slavkovsky, Kemp and Crofoot were all chosen for their still life drawings.
“Rose’s piece shows her great eye for detail and her expressiveness,” said Baynes. “Jamie’s piece is one of the best pieces of art, if not the best, in the entire show and she’s only a 14-year-old freshman. Ashley’s piece depicts her strong technical skills.”
Oerter’s entry was a pencil drawing of a truck which Baynes said really shows Kaci’s skill at drawing.
Both Kyla Grant’s and Maren Burck’s pieces were chosen and voted on by the Capital Conference art students.
Grant’s entry was a photography collage she made for ‘My Own Two Hands’ last year and, according to Baynes, exemplifies her creative spirit.
“Maren’s fish painting collage was also chosen and depicts her great sense of humor,” said Mike.
The high school is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
