News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The best athletes are those who adapt to whatever situation arises in competition. So, if nothing else, the adverse conditions at Saturday’s La Pine Invitational gave the Outlaws boys track team an opportunity to test its toughness and flexibility.
Non-stop rain and numerous delays in the action caused the meet to drag well behind schedule.
“The conditions and other problems made it the kind of meet you just get through and put behind you,” said head coach Ross Kennedy. “I was proud of the kids for sticking with it and competing hard.”
Sisters placed fifth among 16 teams with 44 points. Henley overwhelmed the rest of the pack, racking up 152 points to take home the team trophy. The 400-meter relay team got things off on the right foot with a fourth-place finish in 46.08 and Stefan Redfield battled to a sixth-place finish in the 1,500 in 4:36.
Cory McCaffrey came through with a fifth-place finish in the 100 (11.92) and Eli Callan placed sixth in the 110 hurdles (17.9). Callan also placed fifth in the 300 hurdles (45.11). Redfield doubled back in the 800 meters where he finished a solid fourth in 2:10.93 and ran as part of the sixth-place 1,600-meter relay team along with Matt Neilson, Jeff Liming, and Eli Callan.
The rain made it too dangerous to do the pole vault, so all three of the Outlaws vaulters scratched from the competition. Sisters got some big points in other field events including the high jump where Daniel Holloman took first place with a humble jump of 5-feet-8-inches.
Cory McCaffrey took fifth in the long jump (19 feet 5.5) and Matt Neilson scored fifth place in the triple jump at 38-feet-4 inches.
The track team returns to action in a conference meet Tuesday, May 2 at Molalla.
