Tennis team clinches league title

Sisters defeated Stayton 5-2 in their final league match of the season on Thursday, April 28, to clinch the league title for the third consecutive year.

Coach Janis Quiros said the Lady Outlaws haven’t lost a league match to any Capital Conference team in three years.

The doubles teams swept their matches in straight sets.

Elyss Clasen and Liz Dale (No. 1) defeated Tracy Brogette and Brooke Sessom 6-1, 6-1 and the No. 2 duo of Jaci Armstrong and Claire Rerat defeated Alba Gomez and Katelyn Rotheleguiche 6-3, 6-2. Jill Zepeda and Amanda Sarles (No. 3) earned the win over Marcie Priscall and Kcenia Anderson 6-2, 6-2.

In singles, No. 1 Marigrace Marshall defeated Sam Boroski 6-2, 6-4 and Brianna Wellman (No. 2) earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Shawna McNally.

Two days earlier the Lady Outlaws earned a 4-3 victory at Cascade.

Brianna Wellman (No. 2) was the lone singles player to win a match. Wellman won in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles Elyss Clasen and Liz Dale (No. 1) won their match 6-3, 6-0. Jaci Armstrong and Claire Rerat (No. 2) won 7-5, 6-3 and Jill Zepeda and Amanda Sarles (No. 3) won 6-2, 6-4.

The previous week, Tuesday, April 19 the team beat Molalla 5-2 and on Thursday, April 22 earned a 5-2 victory over North Marion.

Toward the end of the match with North Marion at Black Butte Ranch the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles were forced to finish in the rain. Players had to squeegee the court and girls finished their matches under slippery conditions.

Sisters will compete in the Class 3A-2A-1A Special District 2 Championships on May 12-13 at Black Butte Ranch.
