News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters third-graders are learning to be water-safe — and having a great time while they’re at it.
Mr. Kelly Powell’s third grade class from Sisters Elementary School has been swimming at Sisters Athletic Club (SAC) three mornings a week during May.
Starting shortly after 8 a.m., the youngsters get a 70-minute workout. The pool buzzes with energy — and noise.
“Our goal is to make each child water resistant,” said Jeremy Storton, head swim instructor at SAC. “In case someone falls into a pool or other body of water, they’ll feel comfortable enough to be able to save themselves.”
Part of the morning’s practice included Mr. Powell splashing around in the pool as a “shark” trying to catch young “minnows” swimming past. Also taking part are swim instructors Rosie Horton and Rebecca Womack (as sharks).
Parents Joey Hougham, Bill McDonald, Bruce Peasley and Marcia Rietmann sat on the deck watching their minnows. The parents assist in helping with locker room activities before and after the swim lessons.
The children are grouped as trout, salmon, or dolphins, depending on their swimming abilities. Dolphins are the top swimmers.
Sisters Rotary, local teachers and SAC support the successful swim program for Sisters third-graders. Previous sessions were held during November and January.
