Girls golf team takes district title

The Lady Outlaws defeated Molalla by 84 strokes to capture the District title for the third consecutive year. The Capital Conference Special District 8 Girls Golf Championships were held at the Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla on Monday and Tuesday, May 9 and 10.

On Monday Sisters scored a 374 for their best round of the season despite the rainy and windy weather conditions. Tuesday’s round was even better. The Lady Outlaws broke their own record and shot a season best of 350, for a two-day total of 724.

Molalla was runner up at 808, Sweet Home third at 860, Cascade fourth with a score of 1,145 and fifth place went to Blanchet (1,263). Central, Stayton, Kennedy and Regis all had incomplete teams.

Kayla Miller was the tournament medalist. Miller shot a 90 on Monday and a 76 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 166. Miller trailed Christine Collier, Chelsea Gagner and CeCe Ferlan by four strokes heading into Tuesday’s round. Kayla had three birdies on Tuesday to catch the leaders and win medalist honors.

Other individual two-day scores for Sisters were: Krystal Fitter (92-93); Brittany Reed (95-90), MacKinzie McClain (104-91) and Alexis Wainwright (97-106).

“I was really pleased with the play of all the girls on both days,” said Flande. “The weather was wet and nasty and the course was pretty soggy.”

Flande added, “Brittany Reed had an excellent tournament and played her best golf of the season.”

In Monday’s round Reed scored a 95 for a personal best and on Tuesday she beat that score by five strokes for a new personal best of 90.

Reed, who tied for fifth place with teammate Fitter said, “It was really exciting and reassuring to me. I’ve taken a lot of lessons throughout the year, so to shoot under 100 was nice.”

Flande said, “MacKinzie shot her best round on the second day and Alexis helped the team out with her best round of the season on Monday. Kayla played her best round on Tuesday and Krystal played solid both days.

“You couldn’t ask for a better two days,” said Flande. “The girls are working hard and playing well. What a great time to play our season’s best. Our putting was better and we are cutting down on big numbers. We’re making less mistakes and the scores are starting to show the improvement the kids are making.

“Everybody played so well and I think a lot of that has to do with their positive attitudes. This group of girls has worked hard and it payed off with a third consecutive district title,” said Flande.
