Outlaws lose two on the diamond

The Outlaws lost 5-3 to league leader North Marion on Wednesday, May 11.

Sisters jumped out early in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Jeff Fitter singled and then Andy Burke got hit by a pitch, which put runners at first and second. Fitter later scored on a ground ball by Blake Poynor and Burke scored off a single by Jesse Stevens.

The Huskies scored two runs on a two-out error in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Both teams put another run on the scoreboard in the fourth to keep the game tied at 3-3. Burke hit a double off the left field fence and scored off a single by Poynor.

The Huskies had single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to clinch the 5-3 win.

“We just couldn’t generate any more offense,” said Coach Kevin Bigby.

Husky pitcher Kyle Miller came on in relief with two outs in the fifth inning and shut the door on the Outlaw offense. Miller finished with four strikeouts to finish the game.

“It was a pretty well played game,” said Bigby, “but we were plagued by a couple of errors. They (NM) are the first-place team in the league and didn’t make any errors.”

Fitter pitched the entire game for the Outlaws and according to Bigby did a good job. Fitter had four strikeouts and gave up only one walk. Fitter also had two hits in the game and teammate Poynor batted in two runs.

The very next day the Outlaws lost 15-0 at home against Cascade.

The Outlaws were a little shorthanded and Coach Kevin Bigby had to bring up five kids from the JV squad.

“We had some younger guys throwing for us and for some it was their first varsity experience,” said Bigby. “They struggled to throw strikes, had seven walks and hit four batters.

“It was just one of those days,” he said.
