Outlaws win several district titles

Senior Daniel Holloman jumped and ran his way to three individual titles at the Capital Conference District Track and Field Championships May 13 -14 at Sisters High School.

In the process he helped his team finish a surprisingly close third in what was considered a rebuilding year for the boys.

Molalla won the meet with 158 points, followed by Stayton (140), Sisters (138), Cascade (134), Sweet Home (49), and North Marion (38).

On Friday Holloman captured his second career long jump title (he won as a freshman in 2002) with a leap of 20-feet-8.5-inches. He won the high jump at six feet.

Saturday, after placing second in a very tight triple-jump competition (40-feet-6.5-inches), Holloman came through with a remarkable victory in the 200-meter dash (23.64) to cap his day.

With 38 individual points he was the top scorer in the boys meet. Over his four year career, Holloman has qualified for state in seven different events. In addition to the four this year he qualified in the past in the 300 intermediate hurdles and as a member of the 400 and 1,600 meter relays.

“He is the epitome of a track athlete,” said head coach Ross Kennedy.

Sisters had co-champions in the pole vault as Wes Hodson and Morgan Mansker both cleared 13 feet to win the event. Matt Neilson will advance to the state meet in the triple jump. He was edged by .25 of an inch (40-feet-6.5 to 40-feet-6.25) by teammate Holloman, but got the nod when Holloman elected to drop the event to concentrate on his other three.

The Outlaws scored heavily in the jumping events.

Jake Seal took fourth in the triple jump (40-feet-2-inches) and third in the long jump (19-feet-1.75-inches) and Eli Callan claimed fourth in the long jump (19-feet-.25 -inches).

Callan also placed third in the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.86) and fifth in the 110 high hurdles (16.93). Kelly Crowther, a freshman, came through with fourth in the intermediates in 43.5 seconds.

Byron Womack exploded with two personal bests to place third in the discus (133-feet-5-inches) and fourth in the shot put (42-feet-2.5-inches).

Freshman sprinter Corey McCaffery finished an impressive third in the 100 (11.71) and fourth in the 400 (53.11).

In the middle distance events, Stefan Redfield established himself as the top sophomore in the league with fifth-place finishes in both the 1,500 meters (4:20.09) and the 800 (2:07.38). His 1,500 meter time was a 7-second personal best.

The 400-meter relay team of McCaffery, Neilson, Crowther, and Callan finished third (45.51) as did the 1,600-meter relay of Neilson, Crowther, Redfield, and Womack.

The Outlaws state qualifiers could make some noise in Eugene this weekend, according to Kennedy.

“With four seniors representing us, I feel good about the kind of focus our team will have,” he said.
