Students to perform ‘Musical Chairs’

A cast of 25 student dancers, singers and actors will perform Musical Chairs, A Musical Revue about Love and Laughter on Friday and Saturday, May 20-21, at the Sisters High School auditorium.

Kit Stafford, artist in residence for the Sisters School District, gathered and compiled pieces for the original revue, including pieces from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Stafford will direct the musical and SHS choir teacher Tara MacSween will assist as the vocal director.

Stafford said, “The musical consists of little jewels all strung together to make an evening of light and surprising theater.”

Musical Chairs includes a number of Broadway show tunes: “Matchmaker” from Fiddler on the Roof and “Get Me To The Church on Time” and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” from My Fair Lady.

“Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” is another familiar song as well as “I Can’t Say No” from the musical Oklahoma.

Students will dance to “All That Jazz” from Chicago and “Dance in America” from West Side Story.

Also included in the musical revue will be vignettes from Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and others plus a variety of poems.

“It’s a funny show,” said Stafford, “and includes scenes, songs and poems about life’s childhood games like hide and seek, musical chairs, tag, farmer in the dell and more, all of which are metaphors for views on love and growing up. Each student will be showcased in an area where they shine. The musical moves quickly and there’s a lot to see.”

Stafford told The Nugget the musical has given kids a chance to do short pieces without a huge rehearsal commitment. Students who participate in sports and other extra curricular activities were able to find time be involved in the production.

“This is an effort to bring the joy of live theater to the community of Sisters.

“Without a drama class at the high school I’m happy to have the opportunity to work with kids that have a driving interest in performing arts. It’s a natural outpouring for high school students to want to develop and share their love of the stage,” said Stafford.

Prices for admission are: Adults $7; students $5; children 12 and under $3.
