News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Four players from the girls’softball team earned all league awards this season, including Cortney Peters, Crystal Jewell, Sammy Stoneback and Becky Bremer.
Senior and first baseman Cortney Peters was named second team all league. Peters batted .370 and made only one defensive error the entire season.
“She should have been on the first team,” said Coach Doug McDonald. “She’s a hard worker, a great team leader and is one of the top three players in the league.”
Crystal Jewell also earned second team all league honors. Jewell batted .285 as the Outlaws’ lead-off hitter.
McDonald said, “Crystal stole six bases to lead the team and played a strong right field for us. She was a great senior leader and I’m really glad she got recognized.”
Honorable mention went to freshman pitcher Sammy Stoneback.
“Sammy displayed a lot of courage for a 14-year-old freshman,” said McDonald. “There are a lot of big hitters in our league and she went right after them. I’m really happy she got recognized for her accomplishments. She’s got a bright future.”
Becky Bremer received honorable mention for utility/defense.
“Becky was the only player I asked to play more than two positions which is very difficult to do,” said McDonald. “She played catcher, shortstop, third base and even did a little pitching. She did a great job at everything and was a well rounded player.”
McDonald was disappointed Cindy Harp wasn’t recognized.
“It was pretty frustrating that Cindy wasn’t recognized for her accomplishments this year,” said McDonald. “She was one of our best all around players, a great leader and the heart and soul of our team.”
Assistant coach Chris Peters was honored. Peters was named the Capital Conference assistant coach of the year and McDonald told The Nugget he couldn’t have made it through the year without him.
“Chris has been in an unpaid position for the last four years and has done a heroic job. He built our two fields at the high school and has been in charge of field maintenance,” McDonald said. “He’s spent hundreds of hours and lots of his own money to keep the softball program afloat.”
