Lady Outlaws bag win in last softball game

Senior Cortney Peters carried her team to an 8-7 victory in the girls’ last softball game of the season at home against the Stayton Eagles on Monday, May 16. Peters hit three doubles in three at bats.

Stayton got off to a quick start with two runs on five hits in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Sisters battled back with great energy to score a run in the bottom of the first. Cindy Harp singled and then Peters doubled to the right center wall to knock Harp in and close the Eagle lead to 2-1.

Sisters scored four more runs in the third.

Crystal Jewell started off the inning and reached first base on an error. Harp singled and then both players advanced on a passed ball. Peters blasted her second double of the game to the left center wall to score Jewell and Harp. Camille Pederson drew a walk and then both Peters and Pederson advanced on a passed ball. Courtney Overstreet reached first base on a throwing error. Two runners crossed the plate and Sisters went up 5-2.

The Outlaws scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Peters led off with her third double which flew straight away to the center field wall. Pederson doubled to score Peters. Becky Bremer stepped up to the plate and was hit by a pitch which placed runners at first and second. Sammy Stoneback’s single loaded the bases. Overstreet hit a two-RBI single and then J.J. Ashley doubled to knock in Stoneback, pushing the Outlaw advantage to 8-2.

The Lady Eagles scored a run in the sixth and then battled hard to make the game a nail biter in the seventh inning.

Stayton scored four runs in the top of the seventh to close Sister’s lead to 8-7 but the Outlaws held on for the win.

Becky Bremer had a great defensive game at shortstop.

Coach Doug McDonald said, “Cortney (Peters) didn’t want to lose her last game and she came out fired up and carried us offensively just like she has all year.

“The girls all played with great energy and it was a great way to end the season.”
