Mud Flats is open for business

Mud Flats Espresso shop opened its doors in Sisters just a little over two weeks ago. Mud Flats is owned and operated by Don Bumgardner and is located in The Village at the corner of East Main Avenue and Fir Street just one block north of Bronco Billy’s.

Bumgardner and his fiancée Christina Williams moved from Albany to Sisters in September of 2004. Bumgardner owned an espresso shop in downtown Albany very similar to the one here in Sisters.

Don said, “We moved here for the foot traffic. In Albany there was little to none. I’m hoping the festivals and weekend activities will be enough to promote our business and keep it alive.

“We’re different from most of the other coffee shops in town because we’re primarily an espresso shop. It’s our main fare here.”

Mud Flats offers espresso drinks, smoothies and smoothies with protein on request. Bumgardner plans to add a line of natural fruit juices made fresh to order with in-season fruit.

“It will be like a mini juice bar,” said Bumgardner.

Customers can enjoy lemon, blueberry, peach, and apple cinnamon pastries made fresh by the owner himself. An assortment of gift items including cups, travel mugs, t-shirts, posters, coffee beans, ground coffee, and tea are also available.

Mud Flats Espresso is roasted by Raven Brew Coffee Company which is based out of Tacoma, Washington and originally from Alaska. Artwork accompanies the coffee’s packaging to make it easy for the customer to identify the different roasts.

One example is a morning breakfast coffee called the Wicked Wolf. The artwork depicts a wolf saying, “Grannie’s gone but the coffee’s still on.”

Mud Flats is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturday the shop opens at 7 a.m. and on Sunday at 8 a.m.

Bumgardner told The Nugget that closing times for Saturday and Sunday will depend on customer traffic.

Mud Flats is located at 192 E. Main Ave.
