Camp Sherman marks Second of July

Large crowds, good weather and a new tradition helped make Camp Sherman’s holiday weekend a festive one.

A planned event — “A nearly 4th of July parade” — was called off because of the timing and necessity of filing parade permit papers with Jefferson County. Instead, a group of local Shermanites gathered for a “walk” on Saturday, July 2, afternoon starting at the Community Hall and progressing along the one-mile trail to the Camp Sherman Store.

The Ponderosa-lined trail, ablaze with wildflowers, proved an excellent choice for the holiday celebrants. Several dozen folks from seven to 70, attired in patriotic garb, walked or rode decorated bikes and wagons along the walk route.

Camp Sherman resident Lee Farm drove his 1930 Ford truck on Road 1419, taking passengers along the course. A special kazoo music section provided stirring patriotic melodies for the walking group.

Reaching the store, a gathering crowd anxiously awaited the start of the barbecue dinner and evening’s music. Chef Roger White and his staff prepared the holiday meal for the hundreds of locals, visitors and “walkers.”

Dinner choices consisted of hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, or wursts with tossed green salad, Roger’s special baked beans, potato salad, and beverages as holiday appetites were amply filled.

Doug and Katie Cavanaugh played for the relaxed crowd and provided a full evening of musical entertainment. Several rows of people sat and listened on nearby chairs while others ate dinner at picnic tables on the grass.
