News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Artist, illustrator, author and casting master Jason Borger comes to Camp Sherman this July to highlight the fourth Metolius River Bamboo Rod Fair, set for Saturday, July 16, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Borger did the magnificent “shadow casting” and fishing for actor Brad Pitt in the 1992 movie “A River Runs Through It,” by Robert Redford.
The film is credited with bringing fly fishing to the masses and popularizing the sport as never before.
Borger will demonstrate the casts seen on the silver screen and others techniques that will help fly anglers. He will unfurl the delicate lines on the spacious lawns behind Camp Sherman’s three-room schoolhouse.
Private casting lessons from Borger are available the days before and after the Bamboo Rod Fair, July 15 and 17. He will autograph copies of his newest book and some of his artwork will be available to purchase.
The free event focuses on the bamboo fly fishing rod and its many legendary aspects. Rod construction, finish and handling will be demonstrated.
Six talented Northwest rod makers will build a rod during the show. It will be raffled off at the end of the event.
More than 200 rods will be available for casting. The State of Oregon Angler Education Program’s certified casting instructors will help introduce fly casting to all, from the youngest to the oldest.
Antique tackle collectors and appraisers will give free evaluations and appraisals. New fly fishing gear from top manufacturers will be displayed and available for sale.
Judith O’Keefe, wife of noted angler and photographer Brian O’Keefe, will present her ever-popular slide show of favorite angling around the globe.
Deschutes River fly fishing guide and author John Judy will perform single handed spey-type casting.
He will also talk about the famed Metolius River bull trout.
Judy will also host a PowerPoint presentation on his fly-fishing book “Slack Line Strategies.”
Jens Lovtang, MS in Fisheries Science, OSU, will give a PowerPoint presentation on geology, hydrology, and fish communities of the Metolius River.
Also, Matt Weeber, OSU Master’s student, will be on hand to share his research on bull trout in Oregon.
Food and soft drinks will be available.
