Titchener family operates Hitchin’ Post

If you need a quick breakfast or lunch at an affordable price — or a bottle of aspirin or an ice cream cone — The Hitchin’ Post General Store next to Sisters Oil on Cascade Avenue has its doors open.

While Dennis and Pam Titchener welcome everybody into their new establishment, they are particularly focused on local needs.

“That is our main focus — the community,” Dennis said.

The couple brings a formidable background in retail and food services to bear at the new store.

Pam worked for a year at the Camp Sherman Store and Dennis built a career in the grocery distribution field with Core-Mark International.

In fact, Dennis got involved at The Hitchin’ Post as a consultant, designing the facility for another prospective owner/operator.

“I just took the best out of all the good stores I’ve been in or worked in,” he said.

When the other prospective owner backed out, Dennis and Pam decided to take on the store as their own. They brought their sons Nolan and Christopher along with them.

“We wanted a family business, something we could all be part of,” Pam said.

The store is decorated inside and out to fit Sisters’ Western theme. Hitching posts mark the head of each parking stall and the cabinetry is done in knotty alder that lends a rustic touch.

Customers have been making suggestions and the Titcheners are all ears. Requests for more groceries led to beefing up that end of the business. Customers find it convenient to stop while downtown for grocery items.

And The Hitchin’ Post’s unique custard soft-serve ice cream in more than 20 flavors “has been a huge hit,” Dennis said.

Part of the focus on locals has been to make breakfast available at 6 a.m. for early-bird working people.

“They stop in and get a breakfast for under $5 at 6 a.m.,” Dennis said. He noted that many early customers also stock up for lunch while they’re there.

The 3,400-square-foot store is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. except Sundays (8 a.m. to 10 p.m.).

“We’ve got a little bit of everything for everybody,” Dennis Titchener said.
