News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters Habitat for Humanity is hosting Habitat International’s “Summer Youth Blitz.”
Youths from 12 states have been in Sisters for the past week to help build a Habitat town home. They are roofing, hammering nails, laying sod, insulating and drywalling a townhouse during a two-week building session ending July 29.
“Most youth have never been given an opportunity to be part of something as big as Summer Youth Blitz. We are thrilled to be part of this life-changing activity,” said Sharlene Weed, Executive Director of Sisters Habitat for Humanity.
Students ages 16 to 18 from high schools and youth organizations are participating in this year’s build. Sixteen students and four adult supervisors will work during the session to build the 32nd and 33rd Habitat homes in Sisters.
Robin Tawney and Doug Kaufman will purchase the homes after completing 500 hours of “sweat equity.”
“I truly appreciate the help that these caring and generous youth are giving to our affiliate. They’re good scouts!” said Kaufman. Tawney agrees saying, “I think it’s awesome! I think it’s amazing and wonderful! It’s really special that they are taking part their summer to help someone they don’t even know.”
“Youth not only build homes, but also build leadership skills and friendships,” said Kathy Saad, Habitat International’s Summer Youth Blitz Manager. “Our program provides a common ground for young people who want to help a family achieve the dream of home ownership.”
In the evenings, the students participate in activities such as team-building games, leadership development and a local cultural event or a community dinner.
“We welcome the opportunity to get young people excited about our building ministry,” said Sharlene Weed. “It is through the hearts and minds of our young generation that we can help create the changes in our society that will help eliminate substandard housing in our communities.”
Summer Youth Blitz is part of Habitat for Humanity International’s Campus Chapters & Youth Programs. Homes have been built in Alabama, Mississippi, New Mexico, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Mexico and elsewhere.
