News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Summer hikes led by members of Three Sisters Fellowship are continuing through August and everyone is welcome according to co-leader Kim Barry.
Recent hikes into Tamolitch Pool and Obsidian Falls were magnificent, participants report.
The trip into Tamolitch included 15 adults and 16 kids and provided a great opportunity to unite, said Kim Barry. Tamolitch is very kid-friendly since it is fairly level and only about four miles long, she said. In contrast, a hike around the Obsidian Trail loop through Sunshine Meadow with a jaunt up to Arrowhead Lake totaled 15 miles and attracted four adults and two teenagers.
The lupine were in full bloom so the air was perfumed all the way through Sunshine Meadow, said Barry. Arrowhead Lake is a little treasure set on the edge of a ridge overlooking the valleys to the west.
Upcoming hikes include one Saturday, August 6 suited for adults and older children to Little Belknap Crater, which is 5.2 miles round trip.
The hike includes incredible mountain vistas, lava tubes and extensive lava flows.
Dogs are not recommended due to the sharp rock, according to Barry.
Hikers should meet at 8 a.m. at Three Sisters Fellowship. Sunday, August 14 features a hike to Proxy Falls and Linton Lake, which is an easy 3.8-mile loop manageable for kids of all ages.
Those choosing to go just to Proxy Falls can do the one mile out and back.
This hike includes a beautiful waterfall. The hike will leave Three Sisters Fellowship about noon.
On Tuesday, August 16, Deirdre Kanzig will lead a hike from Park Meadow, near Three Creek Lake across to Green Lakes on the Cascade Lakes Highway, which is approximately 15 miles. Adults and teenagers are invited to take in what Kanzig describes as a heaven-on-earth hike through alpine meadows, along a cascading creek.
“You’ll never look at Broken Top and the Three Sisters the same way again,” she said.
Since this hike requires car shuttling people must contact Kanzig on or before August 15 to make plans. Her number is 549-0920.
The hike is scheduled to go from 7 a.m. to approximately 7 p.m. Tam McArthur Rim will be tackled on Friday, August 19, beginning at 8 a.m. Older children and adults are best suited for this five-mile round-trip hike, which should conclude by about 2 p.m.
The final scheduled hike of the summer will be in to Little Three Creek Lake on Wednesday, August 24. This is an easy two-mile hike for the whole family that includes lots of tadpoles and frogs.
The hike will depart at 9 a.m. and return by 2 p.m. For more information, contact Kim Barry at 549-2934 or 771-2711.
