Sisters Library is rapidly taking shape

A dream has risen out of the dust of the former Sisters Middle School site.

The new Sisters Library is taking shape as construction crews labor to make an end-of-October target date for the opening of the 8,000-square-foot facility.

According to Sisters Librarian Peg Bermel, the project is on schedule. And a lot of work is going on behind the scenes. Bermel said she has been working with architect Richard Turi to put together a list of furniture requirements to send out for bid.

New furniture will include tables and chairs, lounge furniture and additional shelving.

The shelving from the existing library will be moved to the new site, but more is needed. The new library will boast about three times the shelf space of the current library.

A planning team is also compiling lists of equipment to be purchased outside the construction project budget. The lists include computers and related equipment.

“We’re also working on the move,” Bermel told The Nugget.

Instead of hiring a moving company, the library plans to rely on its active cadre of volunteers and supporters to box books, dismantle shelving and truck the library’s contents to the new site.

Bermel said the library staff “will take any help we can get” and volunteers are welcome. Call the library at 312-1070 to volunteer.

The move itself will be hectic and it is doubtful that the library can continue to offer services while the move is underway.

“Most likely we’ll close for a week,” Bermel said.

The work load is daunting, but staff and library volunteers are focusing on the near-completion of a project that has been germinating for more than two years.
