Post Office is looking for a new site

The Sisters Post Office may have a new address in coming years.

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is looking for a new, larger site in Sisters. USPS real estate specialist Greg Eyemann told the Sisters City Council on Thursday, August 11, that he is looking for either an existing building of 5,800 square feet or a buildable site with 52,000 square feet.

The proposed 5,800-square-foot facility would be about double the size of the existing Post Office located at the corner of Fir Street and Hood Avenue.

According to Eyemann, the expansive 52,000-square-foot site the postal service is looking for would allow on-site parking and easier circulation of vehicles.

“The site size is driven primarily to provide circulation,” he said.

USPS is looking for a building or a site across a wide swath of Sisters, including the entire downtown core and as far afield as Sentry Drive to the west and Barclay Drive to the north.

Eyemann laid out USPS procedures for selecting a new site, noting that there will be several opportunities for public input.

There’s likely to be some.

Councilor Brad Boyd noted that “every morning there’s a lot of local merchants who walk to the Post Office.” He said that if the USPS locates an office outside the downtown core “that’s going to be a lot more vehicle trips downtown.”

He asked whether, if USPS locates outside the core, there can still be a Post Office “presence” downtown.

Eyemann did not address that question directly, but he said that USPS hopes to establish its new Post Office as close to the existing one as possible.
