News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
A warm summer evening greeted several dozen Camp Sherman folks celebrating summer and the recentlyrenovated Community Hall.
The potluck dinner, sponsored by the Camp Sherman Community Association (CSCA), was held outside on the lawn area adjacent to the hall. A bountiful assortment of salads, pasta dishes, ham and chicken was consumed during the leisurely evening by friends and neighbors. Conversations covered recent events and past memories of the hall’s beginnings in this beautiful Camp Sherman setting.
Tonye Phillips, CSCA events coordinator, honored birthday celebrants Lee Farm and Ron Gregg and the assembled group sang a hearty “Happy Birthday” for the pair. Birthday cake and other dessert treats were available for all to share.
Also honored earlier in the day at the hall and in the evening were Marianne and Al Straumfjord, long-time residents of Metolius Meadows, a residential community in Camp Sherman. They are moving to Sisters and will be missed.
Inside the hall, Jon Sheldahl offered guests a tour of the refurbished hall, now on the historical registry. Originally built in 1949, the hall sparkles with improved lighting, a glistening floor, new wood-burning fireplace and a remodeled kitchen area.
More popular than ever, the hall hosts many wedding parties, community meetings, two Pine Needler quilt shows a year, Cabin Fever winter potlucks, and other events. It is a central gathering point for the 300 plus homes and cabins in the Camp Sherman area (108 of these are cabins along the Metolius River).
Besides Phillips, other CSCA board members are Bruce Shaull, President; Ellen Wood, Vice-President; Magda Schay, Secretary; Jake Willoughby, Treasurer; Barbara Haynes, Publicity Coordinator and Jon Sheldahl.
