Boys win one, lose one

The boys soccer team shut out the Indians 3-0 at Molalla on Tuesday, September 20. The matchup was played in the evening under the lights and many fans were able to make it to the game.

According to Coach Rich Hummell his boys started a bit slow but then began to give a clinic on how to play soccer.

“This is the best I’ve seen the kids play this year,” said Hummell. “We were spreading the field, passing and being patient.”

Twenty-five minutes into the first half Eli Callan passed a through ball to Ryley Newport, who beat the keeper in a one-on-one.

Two minutes later, Matt Bryan executed a solo effort through the defenders and buried it into the side netting to push the Outlaws to a 2-0 lead.

Josh Marr capped off the Outlaw scoring with a hard driven left footer low into the left side of the goal.

Hummell noted it was Marr’s third left-footed goal of the season.

The Outlaws defense had a stellar performance and keeper Jared Whent recorded his first shutout of the season.

Two days later Sisters suffered a disappointing 3-2 loss at home to Madras.

The Outlaws started the scoring 15 minutes into the half. Jordan Wellman scored a right-footed volley from a beautiful service from Josh Marr from the corner.

Sisters held a 1-0 lead going into the half.

Wellman scored again three minutes into the second half with a driven left-footer into the far net with an assist from Matt Bryan.

Hummell said, “We dominated play the first half and were playing beautifully. We worked up the sides, through the middle and every which way you can imagine. We missed five or six good chances to bury a few more.”

At the 25-minute mark into the second half Madras scored a penalty kick and narrowed the Outlaw lead to 2-1.

The momentum changed and Madras scored again to tie it up at 2-2. With seven minutes left Madras finished the scoring to win 3-2.

“Even though I felt we were the better team, we know the better team does not always win in soccer,” said Hummell.
