News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The second annual Harvest Jazz Concert in Sisters will feature one of the most exciting working bands in jazz found anywhere in the country, the Mel Brown Septet. The concert will be held at Sisters High School on Saturday, October 8, at 7 p.m., under the sponsorship of the Sisters Jazz Festival.
The band — four horns and three rhythm section players — is one of the most prominent in Northwest history and features, in addition to drummer Mel Brown: Thara Memory — trumpet, Warren Rand — alto saxophone, Renato Caranto — tenor saxophone, Stan Bock — trombone, Gordon Lee — piano, and Andre St. James — bass. All members of this lineup work extensively throughout the West Coast as performers, producers and directors.
The Harvest Jazz Concert will also feature two Sisters High School jazz bands in collaborative performances with members of the Mel Brown Septet. Each of the high school bands will perform two songs which will feature different members of the Mel Brown Septet as guest soloists with the students.
The Harvest Jazz Concert is being organized by Sisters High School Bands and sponsored by the Sisters Jazz Festival as part of ongoing efforts to feature regional jazz performers and to promote youth jazz programs.
The Harvest Jazz Concert has also been placed on the October calendar to align with the Sisters Harvest Faire weekend.
Admission prices for Harvest Jazz are $10 adults, $5 students.
