News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Volleyball teams score victories

The Lady Outlaws three volleyball teams, freshman, JV and varsity all won their matches on Tuesday, September 20 to sweep Philomath on their home court.

The varsity won in four games: 25-18, 25-20, 18-25 and 25-12.

Junior Katie Weber started exclusively at setter for the first time this season and hurt her knee in the first play of the game.

“She’s even got the bruise to prove it!” Coach Chris Crosby said. “But she shook it off and kept going. It took her the first game to get into a rhythm. She did a good job at her first varsity start of being the quarterback of the team and got better as the match went on.”

In both games one and two the scores stayed close until the 15-point mark when the Outlaws pulled away for the wins.

Sisters was caught off-guard in the third game.

“Philomath had us 10-2 before we knew what happened,” said Crosby. “They started a real tough server and gave us just fits trying to get the ball back over.”

Sisters battled back to get to 18 points in the game but had dug such a deep hole for themselves they couldn’t recover, which resulted in the 18-25 loss.

Leslee Zenich started at server for the Outlaws in the fourth game and quickly pushed Sisters to a 5-0 lead. Zenich had two aces in the run. The momentum kept going and Sisters walked away with an easy 25-12 win.

“It was good to get our first win of the year,” said Crosby.

Weber led the Outlaws defensively with 20 digs and recorded 37 assists for the night. Claire Rerat added 11 digs.

Heather Schaab led the offense with 11 kills. Schaab had only one hitting error on 24 attempts. Zenich had seven kills for the Outlaws and sophomore Kalie Ulmer had nine kills and seven aces.

On Friday, September 23, the Outlaws played host to Yamhill Carlton (YC) and won the match in three games: 25-17, 25-12 and 26-24.

Schaab led the team with 14 kills. Shalayna Peters recorded seven kills, three aces and five digs. Setter Kayla Krumvieda dished out 36 assists.

Crosby said, “This was a really good way to end our pre-season. If you look back you can see the progression. First, we lost in five games to Central and then lost to Burns, won in four games at Philomath and then tonight we won in three against YC.”
