Boys soccer team wins two games

The boys soccer team notched two wins this week with a 4-2 victory at Cascade on Tuesday, September 27 and a win over Sweet Home in Sisters on Friday, September 30.

Sisters started off the scoring in their matchup against Cascade just three minutes into the first half with a goal from Andy Phillips.

“After that goal we turned it off and played a terrible first half,” Coach Rich Hummell said. “We were playing below our potential and Cascade came out with heart and put up a good fight. They had a couple of fast and skilled players and it took us a while to figure them out.”

Cascade came through and scored at the 19- and 23-minute marks to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Hummell told The Nugget that after a very stern halftime talk his team came out strong and ready to play the way he’s used to seeing them play.

Fourteen minutes into the second half, Phillips buried his second goal with an assist from Ryley Newport to tie the game at 2-2. Newport scored the go-ahead goal 13 minutes later off an assist from Matt Bryan and Sisters pushed to a 3-2 advantage. Phillips finished the scoring with a hat trick with an assist from Dominique DeLeone and the Outlaws won 4-2.

“I think the kids went in thinking they could walk onto the field and win just by showing up,” said Hummell. “Cascade wanted the game more in the first half. I’m pleased with the changes we made at the half.”

On Friday, Sisters shut out the Sweet Home Huskies 6-0.

Ryley Newport scored Sisters’ first goal of the game in the fifth minute of play when he followed up a deflection off the keeper and put it in. Five minutes later Andy Phillips finished a one-on-one with the keeper with an assist from Matt Ruettgers and Sisters took a 2-0 lead.

Just one minute later Newport dished a great pass to Ruettgers who scored a nice shot off the left post. The goal sent the Outlaws into the half with a 3-0 lead.

Hummell told The Nugget that at the 25-minute mark he made lots of substitutions and his team continued to play brilliantly.

“Sweet Home only lost 1-0 to Marist and has been playing well recently, so we continued to push,” said Hummell.

The Outlaws scored just 21 seconds into the second half when Eli Callan dished off to Newport who put the ball in the net to score his second goal of the game. At the nine-minute mark Newport booted in another one with an assist from Phillips. Ten minutes later Newport scored his fourth and final goal with an assist from Bryan.

“Matt (Bryan) had to labor to get this assist,” said Hummell. “He sacrificed to get the ball to Ryley with a nice slide tackle.”

Sisters walked away with a 6-0 win over the Huskies and keeper Jerad Whent recorded his second shutout of the season.

Hummell said, “Jerad made a great sprawled out save to his left with five minutes to go in the game. I still can’t understand how quickly he got to this shot. It was great stuff!”

“There were no weak links today. Everyone had a job to do and performed to near perfection,” added Hummell.

The Outlaws are currently 5-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. Sisters will travel to Marist on Thursday, October 6.
