Volleyball team wins its league opener

The Lady Outlaws took down the Sweet Home Huskies in their volleyball league opener at home on Tuesday, September 27.

Scores from the four-game match were: 27-25, 19-25, 25-21 and 25-21.

Sophomore Kali Ulmer finished with seven digs, eight kills and two aces. Heather Schaab added nine kills, five blocks and two aces. Cindy Harp had a top notch performance at the service line with five aces.

The Outlaws recorded 14 aces.

Kayla Krumvieda set for the entire match and dished out 25 assists.

“Kayla did a real good job setting for us,” Coach Chris Crosby said.

It was a tight game and her performace was crucial.

“We were never more than four points ahead at any time except at the very end of the last two games and Kayla did a great job in making good choices at setting the ball to the right hitter at the right time so our hitters could be successful.”

Crosby told The Nugget that playing Sweet Home (SH) was like looking in the mirror.

“They’re short, just like us, serve tough, just like us and it’s really hard to get a ball down on their court, just like us.

“It was very important for us to get this win,” added Crosby. “We’d played them at the Outlaw Invitational Tournament and the match was so close we knew it would be a tough match tonight. So, to get the win and start league at 1-0 is starting out on the right foot.”

Sisters traveled to North Marion (NM) two days later and defeated the Huskies in a four-game match: 25-13, 24-26, 25-23 and 25-22.

Although the Lady Outlaws earned the victory, Coach Crosby wasn’t pleased with his team’s performance.

“We had 17 service errors,” said Crosby, “and showed a total lack of focus.”

“The only reason we won the match is because we were blessed with more athletic talent than they were,” the coach said. “If it would have come down to focus and effort NM would have won.”

The Lady Outlaws travel to Stayton on Thursday, October 6.
