News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Sisters High School Key Club is making sure local children find toys under their trees this Christmas. The club is hosting a matinee at Sisters Movie House this Saturday, December 3, and asking movie-goers to bring toys to donate.
In past years, the Sisters Kiwanis Club put toys in its holiday food baskets for needy families with children. But the source for toys is no longer available. The Camp Sherman-Sisters Rural Fire Protection District gave Kiwanis toys which they received from the Portland fire department. But this year the Portland Fire Department does not have extra toys for Sisters children.
When the the Key Club learned of that need, they sprang into action.
In addition to toys, the ticket sales will also help Key Club’s toy drive.
“All proceeds will go towards the SHS Toy Drive. We will have bins outside to collect any toys at that point as well,” said Sisters High School English teacher and Key Club advisor Mary Thomas.
Thomas said she appreciates the help Key Club has received for the toy drive from Sisters Movie House owner Lisa Clausen.
“She’s very giving for her to do that for us,” said Thomas.
“It will be fun. We like doing these kinds of things,” said Clausen.
Thomas said in addition to toys, people can donate clothes or something educational such as books.
The family-friendly movie chosen for the matinee is “A Christmas Story.” It is an all-American holiday tale about a nine-year-old boy and his Christmas wish. The only thing Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB gun but he encounters opposition from his parents, teachers and even Santa Claus. This classic comedy was filmed in 1983.
“A Christmas Story” will be shown this Saturday, December 3 at noon at Sisters Movie House. Tickets are $5.
